A Growing Debt:
This spiritual debt is incurred by breaking God's law (summarised in the 10 commandments). Breaking these rules carries a penalty which we are unable to pay off in this life and which cannot even be paid off in the next life, in Hell.

Every day the debt mounts up. The Bible says that "all have sinned" and "the [whole] world [is] guilty before God." We are all in over our heads and are drowning in this spiritual debt of sin.

This debt can't be worked off because the Bible teaches that we can't pay it back through the currency of good works, church attendance, charitable giving or acts of kindness.

A Generous God:
Thankfully the Bible tells us that God is rich in mercy and love towards us, spiritually bankrupt though we are because of our sin.

God has generously offered to clear our debt at great personal cost. It cost Him His only Son, Jesus Christ. The Bible says:

"For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life."

Jesus Christ came down from Heaven and went to the cross to suffer and die to pay the penalty of sin. He, the perfect one, endured the punishment which we, the guilty ones, rightly deserved.

Three days later, "God raised Him from the dead" to prove that the price of sin had been fully paid, enabling our spiritual debt to be fully cleared.
