John Ritchie (1853–1930) was a Scottish Christian publisher, evangelist, and long-serving editor of The Believer’s Magazine. Born in Old Meldrum, Aberdeenshire, he became a born-again Christian in 1871 during a period of revival in Scotland, an experience that shaped the rest of his life and ministry.

Ritchie began preaching in small local gatherings before devoting himself fully to Christian work. He later settled in Kilmarnock, where his influence grew through both preaching and writing. It was here that he laid the foundations of what would become the John Ritchie publishing work and bookshop, a legacy that continues today.

A gifted communicator, he launched several Christian publications, including The Young Watchman, The Sunday School Worker’s Magazine, and most notably The Believer’s Magazine, which he edited for 37 years. His writing ministry expanded globally, producing over 200 books and booklets along with many gospel tracts. His works were widely appreciated for their clear teaching, strong biblical focus, and accessibility, especially for new believers.

In addition to publishing, Ritchie was known for organizing evangelistic outreach and mentoring younger preachers. While he focused more on writing in later years, he remained active in ministry and leadership within his local assembly.

John Ritchie passed away on March 19, 1930. His legacy lives on through his writings and the ongoing work of the publishing company and bookshop that bear his name.
