The ESV was produced by the Translation Oversight Committee and Translation Review Board, a team of evangelical scholars from a wide range of denominations and countries, chaired by Dr. J. I. Packer of Regent College, Vancouver. Working together across theological traditions, they sought to produce the closest possible English rendering of the original texts.

Consistent with its word-for-word philosophy, the ESV uses gender-inclusive language where the original meaning is not gender-specific, while preserving gender-specific terms where they appear in the original text. It also retains traditional English expressions, including the generic "he," where appropriate to maintain accuracy and natural style.
