Joshua

The Book of Joshua records one of the most significant periods in Israel's history, as God's people enter, conquer and take possession of the Promised Land. Through remarkable victories, moments of failure and the fulfilment of God's promises, the account demonstrates the importance of faith, obedience and dependence upon the Lord.

In Joshua: The Land Promised and Possessed, Albert McShane provides a chapter-by-chapter commentary on Israel's conquest of Canaan, carefully explaining the historical events while drawing out their spiritual significance for Christians today.

The commentary follows the four main divisions of Joshua: entering the land, conquering the land, dividing the land and enjoying the land. Key events include the crossing of the Jordan, the fall of Jericho, Rahab's deliverance, the sin of Achan, the deception of the Gibeonites and the distribution of the land among Israel's tribes.

While historical matters are considered, McShane's principal emphasis is on the spiritual lessons contained within the biblical record. He explores the principles of spiritual conquest and progress in the Christian life, highlighting the importance of obedience to God's Word, the dangers of sin and compromise, and the necessity of relying upon divine strength.

With a foreword by David Gilliland, this commentary also examines connections between Joshua and other books of Scripture, including Deuteronomy, Nehemiah and Ephesians.

Joshua: The Land Promised and Possessed is a resource for personal Bible study, teaching and preaching, helping readers understand the history of Israel's conquest and its practical application to Christian living and service.
