‘Black Friday’ and ‘Good Friday’ are phrases that are quite common in the Western world. ‘Black Friday’ is one of the busiest shopping days of the year. Its meaning is disputed but one possibility is that it marks the beginning of the period when retailers, because of the sales made on that day, are no longer “in the red” (in debt) but “in the black” (in credit). The word “Good” has for centuries been used to describe the “Friday” of Easter. The origin of the term “Good Friday” is debated. However, the phrase is most helpful for us to understand the significance and meaning of the historical events remembered at Easter.

What happened on Friday?

Some 2,000 years ago, in Jerusalem, the Lord Jesus Christ was crucified. He was placed on the Cross by Roman soldiers, having been unfairly tried by both the religious and political leaders. His crucifixion was not the only one that occurred that day. Indeed, in those times, hundreds of thousands were executed in this manner by the Romans. Today though we remember just one man who was crucified at that time. What happened then has significance for every single person who has ever lived!

Why is it “Good Friday”?

The Bible teaches that we all have a huge problem. All of us are by nature separated from God. We resist His authority over every area of our lives and rebel against Him by our actions. Although we are not as bad as we could be all of us are sinners who oppose Him. Our sin must be punished by God. His holiness and justice demand that the penalty for the crime is paid. By ourselves we are in a hopeless and lost condition. Our sin has put us in debt to God. We are “in the red”.

However, there is Good News for all people. God sent His only Son, Jesus Christ, into this world to take the punishment for sin. On the Cross He was treated, by God, as if He had sinned so that those who trust in Him can be treated, by God, as if they had not sinned and as though they are righteous. He paid a debt that He did not owe.

“For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.” (2 Corinthians 5:21 NKJV)

The events of that Friday and His subsequent resurrection on the Sunday make it an extremely “Good Friday” for mankind. If you confess Jesus Christ as your Lord and trust Him as your Saviour, you will have forgiveness of sin and a restored relationship with a heavenly Father. You will no longer be “in the red” but “in the black”. You will have permanent peace with God.

The Lord Jesus has completed the work. All you need to do is place your faith in Him for your salvation and to enjoy the peace that He provides.
