Wording Inside: Winter It’s the time of year when we experience short dark days, icy winds, frost and snow, and treacherous roads: it’s all part of the annual endurance test! Warnings Winter weather usually brings a stream of warnings from the MET Office, Yellow, Amber, and the most serious of all, Red Warnings. They alert us to coming storms, the dangers of snow and ice and the possibilities of flooding. The warnings give time for preparation, stocking up, ‘battening down the hatches’, or, in extreme cases, evacuating. To ignore these warnings could bring disastrous consequences. A Bible Warning In the Bible we learn of the love, grace, and mercy of God, but the same book issues warnings that we would be foolish to ignore. For example, “Because there is wrath, beware” (Job 36.18). “There is wrath”; this is a statement of God’s anger at human sin, including mine ... and yours! God is holy and He regards our failure and rebellion as distasteful. His inflexible justice demands that sin is punished, so the Bible states plainly, “It is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment” (Hebrews 9.27). It’s a red warning, “There is wrath”. The Bible Answer Sometimes severe weather events can be avoided - the wind changes direction, its force decreases and people are spared the full force of the storm. God’s wrath against sin is fixed and the storm of judgment will come, but the core message of the Bible is all about God’s wonderful rescue plan. It tells of how sinners can be forgiven and escape eternal punishment. God’s justice demands that our sins are punished, so how can He forgive us and still be a just God? The answer - God’s justice was satisfied when His Son Jesus Christ died on a cross “for our sins” (1 Corinthians 15.3). In the Bible, Paul who regarded himself as having been “the chief of sinners” said this; “The Son of God ... loved me, and gave Himself for me” (Galatians 2.20). An Illustration Let me illustrate. I was once in a country where the police could impose on-the-spot fines for road traffic offences. My driver was guilty of a minor infringement and was pulled over. I paid the fine for him. The officers did not insist that the cash come out of the driver’s wallet. Justice was satisfied just as long as the fine was paid, and God’s love has provided what His justice demanded. He loved us ... He gave His Son (John 3.16). You have been the object of divine love; in the death and resurrection of Christ, God has made it possible for you to experience His forgiveness and enjoy heaven rather than His judgment for all eternity. The Escape Route In Florida, Evacuation Routes are well signposted in case of a hurricane. The way of escape from the danger zone is obvious. We hope that you can now see that the Bible explains clearly how you can be sure of forgiveness and salvation. It is not by any self-improvement scheme or by becoming attached to any religious group. Because of His death and resurrection, Jesus Christ alone is the source of salvation, and so the Bible says, “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved” (Acts 16:31), or, “Whoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved” (Romans 10.13). If you turn to Him in repentance and faith you will have heeded the red warning and you will be safe for eternity.
