The Cross by Alan Summers

This is the ninth booklet in a series of study guides to key doctrines in the Scriptures. It is particularly for the benefit of Bible Class teachers and others who seek to reach and teach young believers. The clear format and style of writing is appropriate for this age group.

The doctrine of the cross is of fundamental importance to Christianity, whether in profession or practice. Contained in this booklet are five concise sections which deal with the cross historically, legally, doctrinally, symbolically, and prophetically. They could be called chapters except that they are too brief for that, the intention being to provide just enough subject matter for one session of study.

Each section contains approximately two pages of clear teaching about one of these aspects of the subject, followed by the key Scriptures referred to, as well as some very interesting quotes (ancient and modern). A few key questions are added for the reader to answer. The prophetic section is detailed and thought provoking; the doctrinal section clarifies the meaning of several terms we use interchangeably about the work of Christ on the cross (‘atonement’ being well explained); and the symbolic section reminds us that humility, love, devotion, rejection, and also God’s wisdom are linked with the cross and should characterise us.

The cross is a recognised symbol of Christianity worldwide. Sculptures and images are often used as pointers to the real thing, as on tracts for Easter and on the cover of this booklet. It is a well-designed cover, but the message inside is even better, designed to help us understand the meaning of the cross, and encourage us to absorb that into our daily lives.
