Proverbs by John Riddle
While much of the book of Proverbs is attributed to King Solomon, John Riddle reminds us that the source of his wisdom was God Himself. He also points out that of the total 3000 proverbs written by Solomon (1 Kgs 4.32), chapters 10-22 give us only 300 while chapters 25-29 provide around 130. The book also contains works from Agur (chapter 30) and Lemuel (chapter 31). All the contents are not proverbs in their familiar format; chapters 1 through 9 and chapter 31 are written more like instructive prose.
The purpose of the book is summarised as “to know wisdom and instruction” This comprises Instruction, Understanding, Wisdom, Subtilty, Knowledge and Discretion. John Riddle concludes that “the book provides in fine detail the help we need for skill in living in a wide range of circumstances”.
The abundance of content is too great to review here, but it is represented in the example of the commentary on chapter 24 verses 30-34. Mr. Riddle states that “Chapter 22.17-Chapter 24.34 commences a new section in the book. In these chapters there is a particular fervency in which Solomon is making a final appeal to “My son”.”
The concluding verses of chapter 24 are divided as follows:
The setting of the parable (verse 30)
The sloth of the owner (verse 30)
The state of the property (verse 31)
The scrutiny by Solomon (verse 32)
The summation by Solomon (verses 33-34).
Each section is then profitably enlarged and commented upon.
John Riddle’s description and amplification of the “virtuous woman” in chapter 31 serves as a positive contrast to the slothful man of chapter 24. For example, her hands are “willing, prosperous, tireless and compassionate”. Mr. Riddle concludes by noting how this woman can be a reminder to us that “Christ also loved the church and gave himself for it; that he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word, that he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot or wrinkle or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish” (Eph 5.25-27).
I unreservedly commend this book. It will instruct, enlarge and teach practical lessons to young and old that are fundamental to navigating a path for God through life.
