There are great differences between people throughout the world. Language, dress, culture and colour of skin all add to the wonderful mosaic of human life. There are also vast differences in religious and political beliefs. The deeply rooted differences between neighbouring ethnic or religious communities can often erupt in violence. In such cases, the two communities will have very different perceptions as to who bears the blame. We do not trivialise or minimise the dreadful deeds that people commit in the name of religion or political ideology.
But when we consider how mankind appears before God, we make a startling discovery –
there is no difference. That is to say, as far as God is concerned, no race or class of people has any advantage over any other. The Bible says, “For there is no difference: For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God” (Romans 3.22-23). Every single human being, irrespective of race or religious upbringing, is guilty before God. The person brought up as a Protestant has exactly the same sin problem as the person brought up as a Roman Catholic, and vice versa. Equally, the person brought up as a Jew, or Muslim, or Hindu, or Buddhist, has exactly the same problem as everyone else on earth. The common problem of all men and women is that of their sin against God.
Given that all have sinned, life’s most important question for all people everywhere must be – How can I be right with God? In other words, “What must I do to be saved?” (Acts 16.30).
There is an answer to the question, and it is the same answer for everyone. God Himself has provided the answer, which is found in the death of His Son at Calvary’s cross. The Bible says, “Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; and that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures” (1 Cor 15.3-4). The Lord Jesus, who had no sin of His own, died for our sins.
This means that any person in the world can be saved through faith in Christ.
So how do we come into the good of what Christ has done for us? The Bible makes it clear that no person has any advantage over another person. There is only one way to be saved, irrespective of our religious upbringing, and that way is by faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. It does not matter what part of the world we come from, or what religion we have been brought up in. Salvation is to be found, not in a church, but in a Person. The Bible says, “For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him. For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved” (Romans 10.12-13).
