"The just shall live by faith".
These words from the Bible feature prominently in the life of Martin Luther.
As a young man, he believed in God, but his sin and defilement troubled him and he was terrified by the thought of death. He knew that he was unprepared to meet God.
He joined a monastery and climbed a famous staircase in Rome on his knees seeking God's favour.
As Martin Luther read the Bible, he began to see that the sinless Son of God died upon the cross on behalf of sinners and his own great need was to have "Faith - a living, bold trust in God's grace".
Confusion was replaced by clarity. He was now justified by faith and he had "peace with God" (Romans 5:1)
