Gathering the Manna

View daily reading plan: Exodus 16 .14-18

When the Israelites went out of their tents one morning, something new, a white round thing, was on the ground all about them. Bewildered they said, “What is it?” That question gave it its name, Manna. It was angels’ food, bread from heaven to feed them all through the desert journey. They had murmured about lack of food, and later they would murmur about the monotony of it, but God never failed to provide it until it was no longer needed (Josh 5.12). All they had to do was go out and gather it every morning.

Our Lord Jesus said, “I am the living bread [the manna] which came down from heaven: if any man eat of this bread, he shall live for ever” (John 6.51). And so we have come and eaten of the Bread of Life, we have tasted that the Lord is gracious (1 Pet 2.2-3), we have found that Christ saves and satisfies our souls (v.35).

To enjoy Him more, we will be gathering our manna every day, “daily bread”, both natural and spiritual, for “man shall not live by bread alone, but by every Word of God” (Lk 4.4). May Christ and His love nourish our souls continually as we gather daily from the Holy Scriptures “the things concerning Himself” (Lk 24.27).
